Adarsh tells you all about Cristiano Ronaldo’s fitness tracking ring that helps him stay at the top of his game even at 38 years of age
You would’ve heard of Cristiano Ronaldo even if you live under a rock. The Portuguese footballer has 819 career goals so far, more than anyone else in history. He has won 32 major trophies in his senior career along with 5 Ballon d’Or titles, awarded to the best player of the year. He’s also the only man to score in 5 FIFA World Cups.
All of this sounds incredible but here’s another unbelievable fact about the Portuguese legend. At 38 years of age, he just signed a contract with Saudi Arabia club Al Nassr worth €200 million per year (₹17,54,06,00,000). It’s the biggest paycheck a footballer has ever earned!
So how has Ronaldo managed to stay at the very top, despite hitting an age where most footballers are well into retirement?
Well, the answer might lie in his fitness ring!
What is the Oura ring?
The Oura ring is a smart ring by Finnish health startup Oura Health founded in 2013 and is designed to track sleep, heart rate and brain function.
The ring can automatically detect whether a wearer is sleeping or moving. It constantly measures heart rate, respiration rate, body temperature and movement. This data is reflected on the Oura app so that people can identify patterns between their sleep quality and daily activities.
The ring is available in four different colors – silver, black, stealth and gold and costs approximately £2225 or $299 (which translates to ₹24,5000).
Who else wears the ring?
Other famous personalities to have donned the Oura ring include Prince Harry who prefers the silver shade and described the smart ring as the “world’s most advanced wearable technology.”
Former boxing heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has also been seen with the ring. In fact, he sported the fitness accessory on his ring finger, prompting several tabloids to spark wedding rumors.
What else can the ring do?
The ring was originally designed as a commercial fitness device for people interested in monitoring their sleep quality. But in March 2020, Oura announced that it would test its rings as a Covid-19 screening tool with healthcare workers in San Francisco.
The following month, the company announced a nationwide testing program in partnership with The West Virginia University Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. The results from the tests were promising, showing that the Oura ring can detect Covid-19 symptoms up to three days before symptoms appear with a 90% accuracy rating.
So, in case you’re looking for a Covid-19 screening tool, you need to look no further.
The last word
As far as fitness trackers go, there definitely are cheaper and better alternatives. But if this one is good enough for Cristiano Ronaldo, it is definitely a great option for you and me as well.
