Designs and Specs
iPhone 16 comes with a revamped design. Going back to the design language of the iPhone X, the iPhone 16 base models will have a dual-camera setup that will be housed inside a capsule island. The iPhone 16 will have a 6.1-inch display while the iPhone 16 Plus will have a 6.7-inch display.
The iPhone 16 Pro models are designed after the iPhone 15 Pro models. The iPhone 16 Pro will have a 6.3-inch display while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 6.9-inch display. This will be the largest display screen ever since on an iPhone till date.
Both models will have thin borders and always-on 120 Hz ProMotion Displays. iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will be available in five bold colours: black, white, pink, teal and ultramarine The Pro models will be available in Black Titanium, White Titanium, Natural Titanium and a new Desert Titanium colour.
A18 Chips & Performance
Apple has introduced a new 3-nanometer next-generation A18 chip that will support all the iOS 18 Apple Intelligence features like Writing Tools, the revamped Siri, Genmoji, Image Playground, and more. It has a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU.
The 16-Core Neural engine will run ML models up to 2x faster than the A16 chip, making the CPU 30% faster and the GPU is 40% faster and 35% more efficient with support for hardware-based ray tracing.
The internal design has been redone to solve for heat dissipation and chip performance. Thanks to the new thermal design and the A18 chip improvements, the A18 will have a 30% higher sustained performance for gaming.
Action Button & Camera Button
The iPhone 15 Pro featured an Action Button and Apple has introduced that to all 4 models this year. Which means iPhone 16 users can access a series of customizable functions like flashlight, camera, Shazam, Translate and more with just the touch of a button.
There is also an all-new Camera Button which is just like an Action Button but exclusively for the Camera. As it is touch and pressure sensitive, it can be used to launch the camera and take a photo or capture a video. It can also be used to adjust all kinds of camera settings.
The design has been modelled after the shutter button of a DSLR and all third-party camera apps can also take advantage of the Camera Button.
In the coming months, the camera control can be used for Visual Intelligence, a new AI powered feature that will tell the user about people and places that the camera is facing.
There is a 48-megapixel Fusion camera with a 2x optical-quality Telephoto zoom that is cropped from the full camera capture. This makes it like having two cameras in one. There is also a new 12-megapixel Ultra-Wide camera with autofocus and support for macro photography. The Ultra Wide gathers up to 2.6x more light for better image quality in low light conditions. The vertical camera arrangement supports capturing spatial photos and videos that can be viewed on the Apple Vision Pro.
Battery & Charging
There is good news in terms of battery life as the iPhone 16 offers up to 22 hours of video playback while the iPhone 16 Plus offers up to 27 hours
The iPhone 16 models will have the faster 25W MagSafe charging. This will require a new MagSafe Charger that supports faster charging. But this is worth having because with the 25W MagSafe charging, an iPhone 16 can charge to 50% in just half an hour.
15W Qi2 wireless charging is also supported.
Connectivity Features
Just like the previous generations of the iPhone, the 16 models will support 5G connectivity (both sub-6GHz and mmWave in the United States). In the United States, iPhone models again ship without a physical SIM card as carriers now use e-SIM (though this might not be the case in all countries).
Faster and more efficient Wi-Fi 7 connectivity is supported as well as Bluetooth 5.3.
What’s Next for iPhones
It is believed that iPhone 17 – to be released in 2025 – will have the ProMotion technology in the standard versions which is currently limited only to the Pro models. The iPhone 17 could also upgrade to a 24 megapixel front camera that will have a major impact on image quality as well as low light performance. It is also rumoured that the iPhone 17 Pro Max could have a 48 megapixel Telephoto Lens that could be optimized for the Vision Pro headset.
Other rumours include the inclusion of an anti-reflective display that will be more scratch resistant than the current ceramic shield. Exciting times ahead. As Apple announced when they unveiled the iPhone 16: It’s Glowtime!
