Launch Date and Price

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa hailed the Switch 2 as “a leap forward” and that leap begins this summer. The console will retail at £395 (or £429 bundled with Mario Kart World) in the UK and $449.99 in the US – that roughly translates to something between ₹42,000 and ₹46,000 depending on current exchange rates.

Furukawa had previously announced that a new console was being developed. The Switch 2 arrives eight years after the Nintendo Switch made its debut and changed the console gaming landscape forever.

Mario Kart Reloaded

It goes without saying that Nintendo wouldn’t be Nintendo without Mario Kart! The Nintendo Switch 2 will feature the latest version of the gaming franchise called Mario Kart World. From sprawling race tracks and real-time weather effects to lush water physics and enhanced character animations, MKW will be a complete overhaul on its predecessor.

The digital version is priced at £66.99 (around ₹7,000), with the physical edition coming in at £75 (approximately ₹7,800). Based on updates from those in the know, the latest version will be more than just a bout of nostalgia, it’s a full-blown upgrade!

Other Games in the mix

Apart from Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch 2 also promises a host of other first-party titles as well as third-party games. As far as Nintendo games are concerned, the main ones are Donkey Kong Bananza and Kirby Air Riders.

Third party games include Elden Ring, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Cyberpunk 2077, Hades II, Hitman: World of Assassination and Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Wait, there’s more! The Duskbloods, an exclusive multiplayer game from FromSoftware, is set to be released in 2026.

Nintendo has also confirmed that existing Switch games will be compatible with the Switch 2. Some of them may get a version update to optimise them for the new hardware.

Hardware Upgrades

The Nintendo Switch had a 720p screen display but the Switch 2 will feature a 7.9-inch 1080p HDR display with 120Hz refresh rate. It will support a 4K output when docked and the 256GB internal storage will be a welcome relief as the Switch was very low on space.

Other upgrades and additions include Joy-Cons that function like a mouse in supported games, larger buttons and control sticks, improved 3D audio and a brand-new ‘C’ button, which integrates voice chat features.

The GameChat feature will also allow players talk to each other mid-game, while using avatars and low-lag screen share functionality.

The Last Word

So, going by all the details, will the Nintendo Switch 2 be as big a hit as the first one?

Well, to remind you, The Nintendo Switch’s hybrid design – part hand held, part home console – was a game changer and it ended up selling over 150 million units worldwide.

With increased competition and higher tariff rates, the Switch 2 will have a tough time surpassing those numbers. But with its bold visual enhancements, a more expansive game library and features designed with the modern gamer in mind, Nintendo has pulled all the stops to create a winner.

So will it live up to the excitement – we’ll find out in June!
