As Artificial Intelligence continues to develop and evolve, the strategies keep shifting. Adarsh takes a deeper look…

Innovation is the name of the game!

This statement couldn’t be truer when it comes to Artificial Intelligence. Considering the breakneck pace that it is evolving at, tech giants like OpenAI, Google and Microsoft are always at each other’s heels, trying to gain pole position.

So, it comes as little surprise that with each new development, their entire strategy has to shift. Since this race is so unpredictable, these tech giants have no choice but to alter course and keep adapting.

OpenAI’s Innovations

At the end of 2024, OpenAI had announced that they would soon release their latest reasoning model, 03. And as promised, the o3 mini made its debut within weeks of the announcement. It was made available for free through the ChatGPT app and as an API for developers. Apart from more accurate responses, there was also a 24% increase in speed over its predecessor.

But even as the launch was still making waves, a Chinese company DeepSeek launched its R1 model. Analysis done by Microsoft’s security researchers showed that DeepSeek had used OpenAI’s models to train their own.

This has led to concerns about usage of intellectual property and the ethics of training AI models. This incident has highlighted the dilemma of developing new AI models as this can lead to legal and ethical repercussions.

Microsoft’s Strategic Response

As a response to the DeepSeek incident, Microsoft has announced that they will integrate the DeepSeek R1 model into their Copilot + PC. Devices that are equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon X chips will be the first ones to receive this update and this will be followed by those with the Intel Core Ultra 200V chips.

This decision is part of Microsoft’s endeavour to stay at the forefront of cutting-edge technology by incorporating state of the art innovations into their products.

Microsoft is also improving its Copilot user experience by integrating OpenAI’s o1 reasoning model into its framework. As part of their Think Deeper initiative, this integration is to provide users with nuanced and varied responses to queries.

Google’s AI Investment

Alphabet Inc. – the parent company of Google – has announced a budget of $75 billion towards artificial intelligence in 2025, reaffirming their dedication to the cause. This is indeed an enormous investment and it highlights how AI continues to play a pivotal role in the evolution of the digital landscape.

The Last Word

These continued developments highlight the fluid and unpredictable nature of the evolution of AI. As companies continue to innovate, it is also imperative that they consider the legal, ethical and societal implications of their actions.

The DeepSeek incident has highlighted the need for employing caution and having fair practices when it comes to the development of AI. As companies like OpenAI, Microsoft and Google continue to evolve, it is important to stay updated about the latest changes and match them at every step.

In the everchanging landscape of AI development, the interplay between these companies will play a crucial part in shaping the future.
