Superb Indian fielders

Superb Indian fielders
Ajit Wadekar

As a slip fielder, Ajit Wadekar was without peer during a career that lasted from 1966 to 1974 and this is confirmed by the impressive tally of 46 from 37 Test matches. He showed remarkable agility and anticipation and brought off catches that many others would not even attempt. During his time, first as player and then as captain, the spin quartet was at its peak and they received the maximum help from the close-in fielders. Wadekar was one of them guarding the entire slip cordon on his own leaping high, diving to his right or left or jumping forward to complete even a half chance into a brilliant catch. Wadekar was the first Indian to hold four catches in an innings – against England at Edgbaston in 1967 and at the time he retired his tally of catches was the Indian record.
