Graeme Smith
Born: 1 Feb 1981
Teams: Gauteng, Western Province, South Africa

In March 2003, Graeme Smith became South Africa`s youngest-ever captain (at the age of 22). He took over after South Africa`s devastating World Cup show down. He did not have any leadership credentials against his name, and the fact that he had played only a handful of internationals didn`t go against him in the run up to captaincy. Proteas wanted a fresh beginning and they wanted a new leader. In Smith they saw an aggressive left-hand opener who knew how to keep his opponents at bay. He justified his selection as captain on South Africa’s tour of England in 2003, by scoring back-to-back Test double-centuries - a national-record 277 at Edgbaston, and a match-winning 259 at Lord`s - to put his side in firm command of the five-Test series. India could be a tougher tour.
