Railway Minister Lalu Prasad may agree to a passenger fare hike in the forthcoming railway budget, if the Finance Ministry increased the allocation for his ministry by at least 30% to Rs 5,000 crore, according to official sources. Thanks to Lalu’s insistence on a higher budgetary support to fund Railways’ modernisation projects, the Prime Minister has already asked Finance Minister P Chidambaram to explore possibilities of “modifying” the annual plan for the Railway Ministry, sources said. |
