The actress opens up to Moviebuzz in this exclusive interview. Excerpts

Your latest film ABCD is getting good reviews. You must be on cloud nine?
Yes ABCD is a film that is receiving rave reviews and good word-of-mouth from family audience. I am getting a lot of accolades for the role of Chandra, the widow in the film. In fact, this film is an ambitious project for all of us-Shaam, me, Aparna and Nandana. We all worked hard and are very happy about the outcome.

What is your next Tamil film?
It will be Selvaraghavan directed Puthupet which is progressing in Hyderabad. I am gung-ho about the film in which I play a very challenging role.

But how were you convinced about playing a sex-worker in the film?
(Thinking) Yes it was a tough decision for me when I first heard the script. I discussed with my family about it and they were very supportive to my decision to go ahead and do it. I thought that it was a good role in which I could score as an actress of substance. And working with Selva was like a dream… he knows exactly what he wants from each scene as he has the whole film worked out in his mind.

You are one actress who does not mind sharing screen space with other heroines? In fact your films like Autograph, ABCD and now Puthupet has two heroines. Don’t you feel insecure while accepting the film?
Good question. I feel that the most important aspect of a good film is a strong story and even if there are two or three heroines in it, I don’t mind accepting, if I have one performing scene which is crucial. In fact a lot of people advised me not to take the role in Autograph and the same people called me up and congratulated me. I think that I can visualize the character offered to me even if there are only three or four scenes.

It seems that in Puthupet you have an amazing role?
Yes I play a commercial sex-worker and I think that as an actress you have to explore different types of roles. I don’t think that my image will suffer by doing this role as they are also human beings and in Puthupet Selva has etched out my character so well that I’m satisfied. And for people to think that while playing a sex-worker, you have to expose, is stupidity!

What are your future projects?
In Tamil I have not signed any new films and I am getting good characters in Telugu. I play a very exciting role in the period film Sri Ramadasu with Nagarjuna. There are many variations in my character and it will be one of my landmark films. I don’t mind the language if the characters offered to me is meaty.

Why are you always dragged into controversies like the recent news on your secret engagement?
I just can’t understand why I am always targeted. I am a very emotional, loyal and frank person in real life. I take people in their face value and later they turn back and betray me which hurts me a lot. But I have learnt to cope up with such gossips and controversies by working harder. At times it hurts.... but my family has been a big source of support to me.

Do you have any friends in the industry?
Not really. I hardly have any close friends except my sister and mom. In the industry, Cheran sir, Shaam, Aparna… are my friends to whom I open up. Basically I am a normal girl at home who loves to clean my room, go out for shopping to Spencer Plaza where West Side is my favourite hang out, Maya Plaza or Globus. My biggest supporters are my fans who are like my friends. Even when I go out, they never mob or trouble me. All they ask is for an autograph or a hand shake. I simply enjoy their company at times.
