The Goan everybody loves to love, Remo Fernandes, at 50, in his ‘travelogue’ shows that he still possesses a whacky sense of humour and zest that we sense in his music, mostly enhanced by his ultra-rich voice.
What do holidays mean to you?
Holidays are for when I get that itch to get away from my work. I rarely get that itch because I love my work so much.
How often do you travel in a year?
All the time...I am always travelling because of my concerts.
Where would you like to go all by yourself?
Brazil! To ogle at bikinis and thongs without a care in the world and dance the samba from sunset till sunrise on the beach.
What do you prefer to do when you holiday abroad?
Discover the place by reading about its past, visit its museums, cultural centres, monuments, taste local food and get real close to the local people.
What has been your most memorable visit?
My first trip to Paris, walking on the streets and looking around at everything and everyone like a wide-eyed kid. The cleanliness, beautiful shops, the clothes, the non-horning cars, polite drivers, dogs in sweaters, children on leashes; hair and eyes of all colours; the aroma from restaurants, cafes and patisseries; the language. It was so intoxicating.
What would your dream holiday sound like?
A place where you get lots of culture if it’s a developed metropolis, or lots of bonhomie if it’s a rural paradise.
Have you ever been on a budget holiday?
My very first trip abroad; it lasted for 2 ½ years. I earned my way through eight countries by playing the guitar, singing and passing the hat around in restaurants, underground train stations, pedestrian streets. I hitchhiked with a tent and haversack, slept in the open in mountains and fields, and ate cheap food.
What is the most outrageous thing that you’ve ever done on a trip?
While hitchhiking in Venice in the afternoon, my girlfriend and me got romantic and made love in a museum, in between a medieval suit of armour and a tapestry.
What are you looking forward to as far as travelling goes?
My first trip to China in October where I will be doing two concerts.
What goes along with you everywhere?
A notebook that doubles as sketch book, pens of different colours, a digital photo camera, a digital videocam, my credit cards and roaming mobile.
One person that you would love to travel with?
I’ve always enjoyed travelling with Michele, my wife.
A travel tip for the readers.
Don’t forget to brush your teeth every day. You never know who might smile at you, and you might want to smile back.
