Meg Whitman, CEO of pioneering online auctioneer eBay remains the czarina of Net auctions--and that's saying a lot. Three tough competitors, Amazon.com, Yahoo!, and Lycos tried to knock eBay from its perch. It didn't happen.

When a job consultant asked her to attend an interview at a fledgling eBay, Whitman, then an executive with Hasbro, declined. But she reconsidered and within a couple of years turned the auction site into the most successful pure Internet company while making herself the first woman Internet billionaire. Whitman has made eBay a truly global marketplace.
