The WWW was truly the work of one man. He designed it; released it to the world, and he more than anyone else has fought to keep it open, non-proprietary and free.
It was a small computer program written nearly 20 years ago by a lowly software consultant Tim Berners-Lee that spawned the web and created a mass medium for the 21st century.
At every juncture during the growth of the Web, Tim has kept away from money and fame.
The rest of the world may be trying to cash in on the Web, but Tim is content to labour quietly in a sparse office at MIT working on Internet protocols and standards.
