At the age of fifteen, Shah Jahan met Arjumand Banu at a bazaar within the royal palace in Agra. The two fell in love and married five years later. Shah Jahan went on to win many battles and consolidate the Mughal empire, guided and supported by Banu, whom he titled Mumtaz Mahal. After the birth of her 14th child in 1630 AD, Mumtaz fell gravely ill. With her dying breath, she secured a promise from her husband: To build for her a mausoleum more beautiful than any the world had ever seen before. Six months later, Shah Jahan laid the foundation for her memorial across the Yamuna River... the Taj Mahal. |
