Famous thefts in art history

2 of 6

Stolen: Mona Lisa
Artist: Leonardo DaVinci
Estimated worth: Priceless
Venue & Year of theft: The Louvre, Paris, 1911
Modus Operandi: Italian workman Vincenzo Peruggia was annoyed by the number of Italian works in the French collection. So, Peruggia took the Mona Lisa from the
wall of the Louvre while he was alone in the room and walked out with it under his smock. It was missing for two years -- but the public queued up to see the blank space on the wall!
Current status: Back at the Louvre. Peruggia was caught when he tried to sell the painting two years after the theft.
The buyer alerted the cops and the Mona Lisa was recovered, hidden in the bottom of a suitcase in Florence.
