Famous thefts in art history

1 of 6

Thieves walked away with Edvard Munch’s masterpieces 'The Scream' and 'Madonna' from a Norway gallery earlier this week. The 'Scream', valued between $60 million and $75 million, is among the world's most coveted paintings. Ten
years ago, in another notorious heist, a gang broke into Oslo's national gallery in the middle of the night and stole another version of Munch's 'The Scream'. But the thieves were tracked down after they demanded ransom for the painting.

Art theft is big business. It is the fourth largest criminal activity after drugs, money laundering and illegal arms trading, according to Interpol. Ironically, it was a theft that made the Mona Lisa the world's best loved painting.
