helping the BJP gain centre-stage in national politics, Lord Ram is back
in the reckoning. The bridge, believed to have been built by Ram with
his simian militia, has divided the political class in the middle. The
whole issue began with the Union Government’s affidavit in the Supreme
Court in a petition by Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy against the
Sethusamudram Ship Canal project. In the submission, the Archaeological
Survey of India told the Court that there was no historical evidence to
establish the existence of Lord Ram or the other characters in Ramayana,
triggering a controversy. Though the Centre promptly withdrew the affidavit,
the Sangh Parivar has seized on the goof up to revive its fortunes. And
Congress’ ally, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi added fuel to fire
by making some unsavoury remarks against Lord Ram. And the war of words
goes on…
