Home Five Famous Gandhians 05 of 05
Julius Nyerere

'When Gandhi succeeded, I think it made the British lose the will to
cling to the empire.'

Tanzania was the last British bastions in Africa to be dismantled. Nyerere's integrity and ability as a political orator and organiser was a significant factor in independence being achieved without bloodshed.

Nyerere hit upon the idea that the British could be made to leave Tanganiyaka (the capital of Tanzania) from his lessons of the Indian independence movement and Gandhiji's role in it.

Later, Nyerere went on to build on rural development, cooperative farming, and a traditional form of education based on Gandhiji's vision.
