 | 'Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.' Einstein, known to all as a man of physics, was a man of the 1920s, the age of depression and fascism. Several of his friends and colleagues died in the Holocaust. Pressed by the tragic events, Einstein became an active anti-Fascist and a permanent champion of the dispossessed. Elaborating his vision of 'active pacifism', he said: `As long as armies exist, any serious conflict will lead to war.` He spoke fondly of Gandhi and his pacifist policies all through his life. |
