 | | Veerappan | | Nearly three decades of terror unleashed by sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, in the sprawling 6,000 sq km forests of the Western Ghats came to an end on October 18. The bandit was shot dead by a Special Task Force of the Tamil Nadu police. Veerappan carried a Rs 3 crore reward on his head, probably the highest in the country. The brigand had killed more than 150 people, including senior police and forest officials, and over 2,000 elephants. For thirty years, he defied all efforts by the police, the army and several special task forces set up in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to arrest him. | |
