Women voters outnumber men in five states

New Delhi: In five Indian states and one union territory, women voters will play a crucial role in electing MPs for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls as they outnumber their male counterparts, Election Commission statistics indicated on Thursday. Incidentally, all these states fall either in southern or in northeastern India.

"In states like Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Puducherry, the number of eligible women voters is more than the men electors," a poll panel press release said here.

All over India, women electors in the general category - numbering 340,649,406 - will not be far behind men electors - 372,324,113, the Election Commission said. As per the latest electoral rolls, there will be 714 million voters in the 2009 April-May polls - an increase of 43 million over last time, the poll panel said.

Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of voters - at 116,424,101 - while Lakshadweep has the least 44,424. In the category of voters doing government service, men will outnumber women in all states. Incidentally, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of service category electors in the rolls this time, followed by Maharashtra and Haryana.
