Woman home guard in Agra dupes dozens of over Rs.10 mn

2009-09-28 19:00:00

A woman home guard in Agra has duped over a dozen people of nearly Rs.1 crore on the pretext of getting them jobs, getting their relatives out of jail and so on, police said Monday.

An FIR has been lodged against the home guard, Manju Tomar who is absconding and police have launched a hunt for her.

'She was living alone in a rented accommodation in the city and is absconding. Initial investigations have revealed that she has duped over a dozen people in Agra and the amount may well go over Rs.1 crore (Rs.10 million), Deputy Inspector General of Police, Agra range, Brij Bhushan told media persons here.

'She used to introduce herself as a police constable posted in the Agra district jail. She demanded Rs.5 lakh (Rs.500,000) from me to get me a government job and took Rs.3 lakh (Rs.300,000) as advance. However, she is not traceable for the past one month,' Poonam, one of the complainants, told IANS.

Tomar also took Rs.500,000 from another complainant on the pretext of getting his relative out of the jail.

'She took the money about 15 days ago promising to get my cousin out of the jail within a couple of days but she went missing,' said the complainant, who preferred not to be identified.
