Your thoughts on India
It`s been four years since India began organising the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas for overseas Indians. With the all the attention India is getting today, what are your expectations from India and Indians?

a) My expectations are that the politicians should become more mature and knowledgable. b) India is growing due to IT (that grew without political interference) and because of lots of Indians who went abroad due to lack of opportunities in India to meet their capabilities and aspirations. It would therefore be a good idea for the politicians to stay away from IT and industry in general so that it can prosper. c) Politicians should realise that socialism did not work (remember wait list for phones, scooter, TV etc). Every bit of license and control is scope for corruption and nothing else. Therefore politicians should trust the people and remove controls. d) Speed up resolution of legal disputes. Justice delayed is justice denied. e) Remove quotas and reservation. Survival of fittest is the rule of nature. Given the situation in India if reservation goes higher, everyone will get a SC/ST certificate or convert so that they can be eligible for reservation. It will not serve any purpose. Else smart people will have no option but to leave India. I think I better stop now. India can do well despite the politicians! Rajarajan

My expectations from India are the following: Modernize infrastructure by opening up much of the economy to FDI, modernize the military, modernize the police, end corruption and increase citizens' patriotism (plant flags throughout the city, enforce national anthem, etc). I believe that India can spend the next 5-15 years primarily focusing on those four things. By doing so, the poverty reduction and villiage inclusion will be MUCH easier to deal with in the future. Which brings me to the second "phase". Poverty reduction should be the primary for the next 5-15 years after phase 1. From there on, I have no idea what India should be focusing on but I do know that reducing dependency on nonrenewable resources (like oil) and finding new technologies should be high on her list. I do not expect or wish India to have to go out of her way to please NRIs. I think that NRIs should wait a bit longer unless they can truly help India (FDI, donations, intellectual assistence, etc). From the Indian people I expect patience, the upholding of secularism and democracy, and new young leaders. I think we've had enough Indian leaders who are 3 to 4 times the national average age (22). I would also very much appreciate direct elections and eventually the abolishing of Muslim Personal Law.

Though it is now 58 years since gaining Independence, we are still far away from achieving what was promised & envisaged by our great leaders Pundit Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Moulana Azad. & others. Though we have urbanized our cities with huge buildings & other modern infrastructures, the bulk of our population still live below the poverty line struggling daily for their livelihood. Water is the scariest commodity and many of our towns & villages don’t have this basic survival kit. Education, health sector is also worsening day by day as State is failing to impart its obligation by handing over its responsibility to private sector. In brief and I personally belief that we are still far, far from achieving Pt Nehru vision of India when he outline in his first speech as Prime Minister of India “tyrst with destiny"
