Two injured in Peshawar blast

Two policemen were critically injured in a remote controlled explosion on the outskirts of this North West Frontier Province (NWFP) capital Thursday, the 10th such incident in two months.

The remote-controlled device was planted near a school and a power pylon in the congested Rasheedabad area. It went off when station house officer Riaz-ul Islam, accompanied by his police guard, was driving to his office in his private car, Online news agency reported

Police said they had cordoned off the entire area and launched search operations in adjoining areas. The injured police personnel were shifted to the Lady Reading hospital for medical treatment.

According to officials in the bomb disposal squad, the explosives, weighing two kg, was planted on roadside to target the police vehicle.

Peshawar has witnessed a series of terror attacks since early October that have claimed over 240 lives and injured many more.

The city witnessed this year's worst terror attack Oct 28 when a massive explosion in a crowded market killed 117 people and injured over 200.

The attacks have been blamed on the Taliban, which is battling the Pakistani military in the rugged South Waziristan region along the border with Afghanistan. The military has claimed considerable success in the operations.
