The message from Deoband

‘We Declare….

JP SHARMA joined the Indian Police Service in 1954 and served in senior positions in Rajasthan, Delhi, J&K and abroad before retiring in 1988. A founder member of the Association of Retired Senior IPS Officers, he has written several articles on India`s security, governance, Islam, Pakistan and international relations. In this article for Sify.com, he examines the implications of an anti-terrorism conference organized earlier this year by the Islamic Madrassa Association of India.

An anti-terrorism conference was organized by the Rabta Madaris Islamiah (Islamic Madrassa Association) at Darul Uloom Deoband, on Monday, February 25, 2008 .

It was attended by over 10,000 participants including clerics, scholars and religious leaders from across the country as well as representatives of other Islamic schools like Nadwatul Ulema and Sufi orders like Chishtis of Ajmer Sharif, and senior dons of the renowned Deoband seminary.

The Conference concluded by issuing a Declaration which, besides proclaiming the stand of the Conference on terrorism, also contained some observations regarding the performance of the Government of India and gave directions to Muslims and to others for further action.

On the subject of Terrorism, the Declaration stated that---

“…Islam has taught its followers to treat all mankind with equality, mercy, tolerance, justice. Islam sternly condemns all kinds of oppression, violence and terrorism. It has regarded oppression, mischief, rioting and murdering among severest sins and crimes.

“This All India Anti-Terrorism Conference attended by the representatives of all Muslim schools of thought organised by Rabta Madaris Islamiah Arabia (Islamic Madrasas Association), Darul Uloom Deoband condemns all kinds of violence and terrorism in the strongest possible terms.”
