Taliban charges US security firm Blackwater for 'devastating' Peshawar blast

2009-10-30 15:30:00

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has once again denied its hand in the devastating Peshawar blast, which killed over 100 people, mostly women and children, and blamed the private US security firm Blackwater for the blast.

TTP chief Hakimullah Mehsud said if the Taliban could target the Army General Headquarters and other major security installations in the country, then why would it target general people.

"Our war is against the government and the security forces and not against the people. We are not involved in blasts," The Nation quoted Mehsud, as saying.

Later, a self-proclaimed TTP spokesperson Azam Tariq warned media houses projecting the banned organisation in a bad light, saying they could be targeted in the near future.

It may be noted that both North West Frontier (NWFP) Information Minister Iftikhar Hussain and the Pakistan Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas had blamed the Taliban for the Peshawar blast, saying such attacks clearly highlighted the frustration of the extremists who are facing defeat in South Waziristan.
