Sikh body promises to back Congress

New Delhi: A Sikh body on Wednesday promised toback the Congress party in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls sayingthe party always "stood" for the community.

Shiromani Akali Dal (M Tara Singh) president RachhpalSingh threw his weight behind the Congress, saying the partyprovided the community "all their dues".

"Congress has always remained with Sikhs and providedthe community all their dues from time to time. JawaharlalNehru made a Sikh the defence minister, Gyani Zail Singh wasmade the home minister by Indira Gandhi and in 2004, ManmohanSingh became the Prime Minister," he told reporters.

Commenting on the plight of Sikhs living in Pakistan,Rachhpal termed it as "painful and disturbing" as Sikhs in thetribal region of Pakistan were being told by Taliban to pay'Jaziya' (tax) if they wanted to continue living there.

"We have written a letter to the UN Secretary Generalto personally take up the issue of atrocities on the Sikhcommunity in Pakistan and provide them security," Rachhpalsaid.
