When it comes to an apparel for all occasions, a silk sari is what every true-blue Chennai woman has in mind. And speaking of choice, Chennai has a rich and abundant variety of silk saris to captivate and enthrall her - from the the stunning, lightweight Arni handloom to the Thirubuvanam silk made from filature silk and the famous Salem silk sari.
However, it is the legendary Kancheepuram silk sari (also fondly referred as Kanjeevaram pattu) that has every Chennai woman swooning over. It is a continuing obsession that goes back to centuries, thanks to its legendary elegance, flattering beauty and singular ability to impress the eye of the beholder.
The much-coveted nine-yard garment has also been Chennai's most well-known and expensive export.
"Chennai has had a long tradition of creating fabrics that have made themselves indispensable in the world of fashion, two of the finest examples being the famed 'Madras checks' and 'Real Madras Handkerchiefs' or 'Injiri' (cotton cloth with plaid or checkered design)," says Jairam, Managing Partner of Rasi Silks, one of Chennai's premier silk houses. "As for silk saris, Chennai has always been a major trading point," says the eighth generation textile magnate.
