In a terror struck year, if there was something that bled the nation more than the blasts, politics was its name. No opportunity or issue was missed. You name it and it was politicised.
If the trust vote in the Lok Sabha – sought by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the Indo-US nuclear deal after the Left withdrew its support to the government -- seemed more a farce what with three BJP MPs displaying currency notes allegedly offered for abstaining, the politicking that followed the recent terror attacks in Mumbai, only indicates how much the politicians would stoop even at the time of a grave crisis – shown in the selection of replacements for Maharashtra Chief Minister and his deputy.
These coupled with the politics and months-long drama over the acquisition of land for Tata’s Nano project in Singur, and land transfer for Shri Amarnath Board in Jammu, besides the protests in Rajasthan by Gujjars demanding ST status and efforts to add communal colour to terror, seemed only to strengthen the common man’s distrust of politicians.
We look at the political dramas that dominated the headlines through the year, and which made one wonder whether it is time to have a fresh look at the constitution, if not rewrite it, to rein in those who enter politics not to work for people, but to use the power for their own end.
