Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said the Prime Minister has assured Rahul that the "government will look into the matter again and assured him that if it is in the interest of farmers the ordinance will be suitable amended".

Rahul’s meeting with Prime Minister took place in the backdrop of the controversy over the new sugarcane pricing policy that gave a stormy start to the winter session of Lok Sabha which was adjourned on the issue.

Hashmi alleged the agitation of farmers was the opposition ploy to defame Congress. "It is a political drama by regional parties against Congress. It has led to the loss of Rs 1,200 crore".

"Congress appeals to all sugarcane growers of Uttar Pradesh to have faith in pro-farmer policy of UPA government and assures them that it will ensure the highest possible sugarcane price in the present context," Digvijay Singh said.

Rahul , after the meeting with the Prime Minister, did not reply when asked if he discussed the sugarcane pricing policy issue with him.

While we show more thrust and interest on industrialisation, globalisation and other infra structure developments ,it is felt that equal interest is not shown on farmers and agricultural products. Those paddy lands have been converted in to SEZ's, apartments and housing colonies etc. In case if this continues India will lose its Agricultual production and competency with other developing countries and a time may come that we have to import even essential commodities/ food grains on a larger scale.Unless the farmers interest are protected , they are likely to loose interest and the agricultural production may decline.Government should calculate the actual cost of cultivation of each crop and fix a fair price that the interest of the farmers are protected well.We should implement a policy to create interest among farmers to grow more crops to protect our economy and the future generation from depending on other counties/ neighbours.
