Pakistan frees Iranians detained for illegal entry: report

2009-10-27 11:35:00

Pakistan released on Tuesday eight Iranian border policemen who reportedly crossed into the country illegally the previous day, Fars news agency said.

Fars said the group crossed into the neighbouring country while chasing fuel smugglers.

Fars without quoting a source said the group was handed over by the Pakistani army to the Iranian border guards at Mirjaveh border crossing in the restive Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchestan.

On Monday, Pakistani officials said 12 Iranians were arrested for illegally crossing the border with Iran.

"There are 12 Iranians who have been arrested along with two vehicles," Mohammad Akbar Durrani, home secretary of Pakistan's western province of Baluchistan, which borders Iran, told AFP.

Another Pakistani border official said 11 Iranian Revolutionary Guards were arrested after they crossed the border into Pakistan, but he spoke on condition of anonymity and there was no other confirmation.

On Monday Al-Alam, the Iranian Arabic language TV news channel, rejected reports the men were Revolutionary Guards.
