Mumbai: Social activist Medha Patkar and her supporters were on Wednesday arrested in the north west suburb of Bandra and booked on charges of rioting and unlawful assembly, police said.
"Medha Patkar and some supporters were arrested today and booked on charges of rioting, taking out a procession without authorisation and preventing the police from discharging their duties," said deputy commissioner of police (Zone VIII) Nisar Tamboli.
Patkar and her supporters would be produced in court on Thursday, he said.
Activists associated with Patkar alleged that a group of around 500 people were on their way to meet the suburban collector in Bandra when they were arrested without reason.
"We had a peaceful meeting with officials at the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority today regarding alleged corruption in the Slum Rehabilitation scheme. When on our way to the collector's office for an appointment we were arrested," said Simpreet Singh, an activist with National Alliance for Peoples' Movement.
The police had cane-charged the group and after they were arrested and detained at the Bandra Kurla police station they had not been informed of the charges against them, he said.
