Mumbai: The baby-faced smiling assassin, Mohammed Ajmal Mohammed Amir Kasab alias Abu Muhajid, the lone surviving terrorist of the group of 10-member fidayeen commando team, has always surprised one and all. Several times over the last few months. He has also shown no repentance. And often contradicted himself.

Right from the day, he was caught till he confessed to the role during the November 26-29, 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, he has always been deceptive – and sprang surprises. Often smiling in the court, he has been reprimanded by Judge ML Tahaliyani, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam and also his defence advocate S G Abbas Kazmi.

Kasab was caught on the intervening night of November 26-27 last year near Girgaum Chowpatty by the Mumbai Police and he was alone from the 10-member group of Pakistani fidayeens, who was caught alive.

"Mujhe gunaah kubul hai." – this statement when he confessed - surprised even Judge Tahaliyani, who presides over the 26/11 trial inside the high security Arthur Road prison.

Incidentally, this is in sharp contrast and contradictory and diametrically opposite to what he said on May 6, when he rejected the 86 charges against him. "yeh sab kuch galat hain, mujhe kubool nahi hain"- then he has said.

His confession before the court even surprised Special Public Prosecutur Ujjwal Nikam and his lawyer S G Abbas Kazmi. It also came as a surprise to Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria and Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Deven Bharti.

Even Nikam remarked several times: "He is a good actor".

He has always been deceptive and at the initial stages of the trial, he claimed before the judge that he was a minor, but medical examination later proved that he was a major. He had also retracted his confession statement made before a Magistrate and also rejected the charges.

In his confession, Kasab alias Abu Mujahid has said that during the course of their training to operate in a marine environment, they were taught how to read maps, ascertaining the depth and the use of Global Positioning Systems. "We were also told how to throw fishing nets and how to pilot a ship," Kasab had told the Magistrate. However, to a query by the Magistrate on why they were trained to use nets, he had said that this was to avoid detection and mislead the navy personnel – and pass off as fishermen.

Kasab has also told during the confession that they were also told to assume a Hindu identity while they land in Mumbai and tie threads on the wrists like the Hindus do. They were also given fake ID cards with Hindu names, he had told during the recording of confession.

Kasab hails from Faridkot from Okara district of Punjab – and apparently drawn into the network of Lashkar-e-Toiba at his own will. He was born on July 13, 1987.

Despite the fact that he is always smiling, he is dangerous too. And this was evident from his training, in which he excelled. In his confession, before the Magistrate earlier this year, he had said how one Major General Sahab had praised him during the target practice.
