General Than Shwe was able to survive a power struggle and emerged as the sole leader of Myanmar's military dictatorship. Shwe represents the hard-line faction of the Myanmar military. His rule has further deteriorated the human-rights situation in Myanmar. The country has more child soldiers than any other nation, the regime kidnaps ordinary citizens and forces them to serve in the military. It is said that unlike most dictators, who like fame and recognition, Shwe prefers to work behind the scenes.
