  Robert Mugabe

Mugabe was elected independent Zimbabwe's first prime minister with widespread domestic and international support. He, however, has always been something of a political enigma. He gained popular support due to his early political promises of reconciliation and democracy, but all these were later overtaken by a strong authoritarian streak. According to 'Human Rights Forum', Mugabe’s government has killed or tortured and displaced more than 70,000 people. Even though elections are held, an opponent's power is restricted even during campaigning. When opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai won 42% of the vote anyway, Mugabe had him arrested and charged with treason.
