Hu spent close to four decades moving up the Communist Party hierarchy in China. Now, as president and general secretary of the party, Hu is the leader of a repressive regime. China's economy has liberalised and its human-rights situation is better than it used to be. But the party still wields control over the media. It uses 30,000 'Internet security agents' to monitor online use. Foreign human rights organisations say China carries out more than 4,000 executions a year!
