The Mars rover, Spirit, survived a perilous plunge through the Martian atmosphere after a seven-month voyage from Earth. In May The US space agency`s robotic rover Opportunity found initial evidence that rocks at a new Martian crater it explored were deposited in water. With this discovery, speculations were rife as to whether signs of life would be found on the red planet. Mars rover Spirit which was so far eclipsed in its mission by its `twin` Opportunity, found rich evidence of a wet history at its landing site in December. Spirit discovered a mineral called goethite in the bedrock at Gusev which forms only in the presence of water.
