This photograph from the album of Benjamin Brown French, shows the crowd surrounding the East front of the U.S. Capitol, still under construction, during the first inauguration of President Abraham Lincoln March 4, 1861. In 1865, for Lincoln`s second inauguration, blacks march for the first time in the inaugural procession.
