A non-bailable arrest warrant was pending against him for the last three years and he had been evading arrest.

After his arrest, he was produced before Raj Mahal Judicial Magistrate A.K. Dubey, who rejected his bail petition and sent him to 14 days judicial custody.

Murmu is charged with instigating a mob to thrash a government official in 1994. The warrant was issued after he failed to appear in the court.

He lost in the April-May general elections.

The Jharkhand assembly polls would be held in five phases from Nov 27 to Dec 18.
