Did media overplay swine flu panic?

Many people argue that the media has overplayed the swine flu panic. But others feel the TV channels have been performing their social responsibility.

The channels did their job decently well and, as a result, there is awareness about Swine flu among people. If the people now know how to insulate themselves from swine flu or what they should do if one is affected, the credit should go to the media.

Irrespective of whether the western media had a hidden agenda behind playing up the panic, for the Indian channels, A H1N1 seemed to have come as a saving grace to keep themselves occupied with when the country was devoid of high politics or scandals.

I agree that in absence of the media publicity, our dear politicians would never take serious steps to face the epidemic.

The media has overdone the entire episode instead of spreading awareness..... they have spread panic..they should also highlight the positive side by number of recoveries vis a vis the number of casualties

Indian media were very irresponsible in portraying H1N1 and played directly into the hands of pharma companies waiting to cash in. There are so many other important social issues that need to be addressed for which the media turns a blind eye.

Several media including both regional and national level media sowed the seeds of havoc and created a -India shivers in Swine Flu image. The bottomline here is - ntohing serious was happened in any areas, excluding media-developed scare. So, i'm strongly crticising the media as they promoted - harmless - H1N1 to dangerous flu!!!!!!

Quite rightly media loves to exaggerate any incidence which affects people's sensitivity whether any crime, rape, murder, terror, pendemic like HINI or H5NI. They alwyas look for 'Masala' to get people interested in their channel

Media is unnecessarily creating chaos in the name of social responsibility. It is good to know the issue, preventive actions etc. But, the death toll and number of people infected seem to be the key focus of Media.

The awareness about the "new" release..H1N1...was abundant due to the due coverage given by media! It might have been done to increase TRPs too...But it definitely made people sit up and take it seriously!
