Did media overplay swine flu panic?

Many people argue that the media has overplayed the swine flu panic. But others feel the TV channels have been performing their social responsibility.

The channels did their job decently well and, as a result, there is awareness about Swine flu among people. If the people now know how to insulate themselves from swine flu or what they should do if one is affected, the credit should go to the media.

Irrespective of whether the western media had a hidden agenda behind playing up the panic, for the Indian channels, A H1N1 seemed to have come as a saving grace to keep themselves occupied with when the country was devoid of high politics or scandals.

Media coverage on swine flu is appreciated to alert all sections since the H1N1 infections infuture course of time is going to play more havoc as the virus subtype is adapting more to humans with increased virulence through reassortments in pigs. As such the manufacturing of vaccines takes more time by which period there might be some changes in the genetic material of present H1N1subtype making it very difficult for mass immunization.

Media has created panic by continuosly bombarding people with the same news again and again, thus giving an impression of a massive outbreak than actual.this also led to panic and overcrowding of the limited govt.facilities, whereby some deserving cases could not have got required attention and further aggravated the situation.
