Did media overplay swine flu panic?

Many people argue that the media has overplayed the swine flu panic. But others feel the TV channels have been performing their social responsibility.

The channels did their job decently well and, as a result, there is awareness about Swine flu among people. If the people now know how to insulate themselves from swine flu or what they should do if one is affected, the credit should go to the media.

Irrespective of whether the western media had a hidden agenda behind playing up the panic, for the Indian channels, A H1N1 seemed to have come as a saving grace to keep themselves occupied with when the country was devoid of high politics or scandals.

TV channels have played their social responsibility as the pandemic out break was not properly informed to the public by the government earlier.

Did the media overplay or underplay will be really known when we get statistics of deaths due to more common and already known and treated diseases like other viral flue, Malaria, Dengue etc. If I am correct daily hundreds are dying due to chronic indian illness - poverty related hunger and unhygenic living conditions generated many common diseases. If compared to the magnittude (per my wild guess) of the same, we will probably end up concluded that it was hyped by media due to want of any topics for media to keep alive.

Media created unnecessary panic. Swine flu is like any other contagious disease. Not everybody who contracts it is going to die.

Yes, the Media has nothing to do now-a-days, but look to sensationalise anything and everything that they can lay their hands on and have become obssesed with the role of trying to play Creators and have gone overboard.

Some of the TV Channels think that they are experts on everything that makes up the world and it is disgusting to see the way they handle debates and questions and always want to have the last word.

We can do without this.
