The International Workers' Day on May 1 every year
commemorates the historic struggle of working people
throughout the world.
The day had its origins in the 1880s in the United
States, with the fight for an eight-hour work day;
in 1884, the Federation of Organised Trades and Labor
Unions passed a resolution stating that eight hours
would constitute a legal day's work from and after
May 1, 1886. |

The World Press Freedom Day is celebrated every
year on 3 May globally; the UN General Assembly proclaimed
the day in 1993.
Its objectives are multi-pronged — it is an opportunity
to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom;
to evaluate press freedom, to defend the media from
attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to
journalists who have lost their lives in the line
of duty. |
