BJP: Looking back

2009-04-01 13:20:35

In the 1999 elections, the BJP-led NDA won 303 seats, including the BJP’s all-time high of 183. Vajpayee became Prime Minister for the third time in his life.

However, five years later, the NDA suffered a shock defeat in the 2004 general elections, and failed to muster a parliamentary majority. The BJP slogan of "India Shining" and the "Feel Good Factor" boomeranged.

Earlier the BJP came to power in 1998. The NDA had a slim majority and Telugu Desam Party provided outside support. However, in May 1999, AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa withdrew her support, forcing fresh elections.

The BJP first tasted power in 1996 when it became the single-largest party in parliament and Vajpayee formed government for 13 days.
