Ministers vows 'fitting action' against guilty generals

2009-12-01 17:30:00

Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju Tuesday vowed to take 'fitting action' against the senior army generals indicted by an army court.

Speaking to reporters in the parliament complex, Raju said: 'We had ordered the inquiry into the case. Now that the findings have come, appropriate action will be taken against them.'

An army court of inquiry has indicted two serving Lieutenant Generals in a land scam in Darjeeling in West Bengal.

The enquiry, which concluded Saturday, was set up to look into allegations of subverting rules to give a no-objection certificate (NOC) to an educational institution to open its premises near an army institution in Darjeeling.

The inquiry found Lt. Gen. Awadesh Prakash and Lt. Gen. P.K. Rath 'blameworthy', said an official, not divulging further details. Lt. Gen. Prakash is now the Military Secretary at the army headquarters in Delhi.

Earlier, the Indian Army cancelled Lt. Gen. Rath's appointment as Deputy Chief of Army Staff after his name cropped up in the scam.

A no objection certificate is mandatory for sale of land adjacent to military stations.

A preliminary army probe revealed that the institution had no connection with Mayo College, the premise under which the NOC was issued.

Where there is no corruption in india, private, public or govt organisations. Indian army is corrupt from top , all officers above the rank of colonel and above are corrupt, finger tips counting officer may be exception, very very few. What one can have expectation from such corrupt ary generals. Will they win any war for the country. They are there to earn easy money. Perhaps all army generals after THE GREAT Maneckshaw are coruupt of first order, only thing no one has initiated any enquiry against them. BRAVE FRONT.

After years of whispers of corruption in the Armed forces, 2 senior Generals being indicted, actually comes as a relief - that we are finally a mature nation, willing to accept our flaws. Now for the difficult part - will the armed forces (without any intervention from Govt) put in processes to stop this rout? The amount of money we spend every year on the armed forces is staggering and keeping it corrupt free will go a long way to build our image. A little surprised a politician is promising swift action though. Has he ever looked at his backyard? ;)

Since no one is above the law, two top serving army generals being indicted by an army court for their involvement in a big financial scam in Darjeeling should be dealt with under the provisions of the law to uphold the good image of our armed forces.
