Government to build 200 houses for Cyclone Aila victims

2009-10-22 22:30:00

The government has given the nod for the construction of 200 cyclone shelters for the victims of Cyclone Aila in West Bengal.

On Aug 20 Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to the prime minister requesting him for funds for victims of Cyclone Aila.

In a reply to her letter, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said: 'The National Disaster Management Authority has been suitably advised to proceed further in the matter.'

The letter went on to add: 'However, in view of the complexity involved in a decentralised project of this magnitude as well as the resource position available in the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, it would be advisable if the project is completed in a phased manner.'

The letter said that in the first phase, 200 houses will be constructed in West Bengal.

Cyclone Aila hit West Bengal in May, killing 24 people and affecting 10,000 families.
