Mumbai: Nearly a year after the gruesome fidayeen attacks in Mumbai including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), one of the busiest railway terminuses in the world, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) is on a major modernization plan to upgrade security and meet the emerging threat of terrorism. The RPF unit of the Central Railway (CR) has already initiated various procedures to technologically upgrade itself and Installation of CCTV system, commissioning of state-of-the-art CCTV monitoring room and so one - which are are few unmatched steps towards upgradation of security. Official sources said that it is also working towards expeditious implementation of the Integrated Security System under which procurement of modernized security equipments such as Door Frame Metal Detectors, Explosive Detectors, baggage screening X-ray machines etc is to be made in addition to forming of its own Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads, at an approximate cost of over Rs 30 crore. It has the largest canine contingent (50 dogs) which has been specially trained for sniffing out explosives and other narcotic substances. Under the ISS, another 17 pups are to be procured to further strengthen the existing strength of 20-strong canine force in Mumbai. RPF/CR has already installed x-ray baggage scanners at important stations and has also been imparting specialized Commando training to its men at the State Reserve Police Unit, Nagpur -a premier training institute in the state and these commandos have been re-deployed at CST and other important stations.
