| NTR and SS Rajamouli are back with Yamadonga
after two blockbusters Student No.1 and Simhadri. This socio-fantasy film works, thanks to the new look of NTR and enigmatic performance of Mohan Babu.
The songs and background score of MM Keeravani, the technical aspects and entertainer quotient in the first half make the film watchable. The film is said to be inspired from an old 1983 Mohanlal film from Malayalam titled Pappan Priyapetta Pappan. Raja, an orphan, is a ruthless robber. He dreams of earning a fast buck so that he can settle down in life. And then, he stumbles on a fine opportunity. A ravishing beauty Mahi (Priyamani), a rich heiress, falls in love with him. The girl happens to be his childhood well-wisher and has always considered him her prince. He plans to surrender the girl to a gang who wants to kill her for her riches. But the villains play foul, and kill him. Raja reaches Yamaloka. He creates confusion in Yamaloka by stealing Yamapasam as whoever in possession of Yamapasam will become Yama. The rest of the story is all about how Yama (Mohan Babu) and Raja try to outsmart each other. After regaining power, Yama sends Raja back to earth, but only to take away his life once again. NTR looks shockingly slender, charged with high voltage power in all histrionics departments. Be it emotions, sentiment, love, action or dance, he has immense screen presence. Mohan Babu as Yama is a revelation. For the first time, our Telugu screen Yama gets into romancing. His punch-filled dialogue delivery ensures his position as a star performer. Mamta Mohandas in a glam role is okay and in the latter half, she gives a good performance as Yama in the guise of a woman. She is given full scope to prove her multiple talents. Priyamani does her innocent-girl act effectively. Brahmanandam as Chitragupta is hilarious and once again he dominates the comedy scenes. Rajiv Kanakala as Indra, Ali as the hero's friend, MS Narayana, Jayaprakash Reddy as the villain who wants to knock away the zamindar's riches and Siva Parvati as the mother-in-law are all good. The songs are well-picturised though they come as speed-breakers at regular intervals. Special effects are good. Cinematography by Senthil Kumar is top-class. The second half of the film, though, needs some urgent trimming. Verdict: Average |
