| Classmates, a remake of that blockbuster with same title from Malayalam does not come anywhere near its original and director Vijaybhaskar has not been able to keep the tempo going. The story is a nostalgic trip down memory lane but the screenplay and narration are slow with hardly anything to satisfy the younger generation. Ravi (Sumanth), Satish (Ravi Varma), Rajeswari (Sada), Boddu (Sunil), Razia (Kamalini Mukherjee) and others reunite after 15 years at the same college that they studied. This reunion was planned years ago by one of their classmates Murali (Sarvanand), a singer who died during their college days. Now Murali's parents a professor (Kota) and his wife, both working in the same college, have made this last wish of their son happen. On the very night of the bonhomie, someone attempts to kill Ravi by strangling with late Murali's guitar string. While he is fighting for life in the hospital bed, the others are left to surprise and police investigates if it was a suicide attempt or planned murder. At this stage some of the classmates and their ex-Professor recall events of the past and many things hereto untold come out of the closet. At the end, Ravi claims that he has just attempted suicide. Is it really so? Sumanth looks nice and did a neat performance as a student’s union leader. Sada, in a small role looks ravishing and perfectly fits into the storyline. Kamalini Mukherjee steals the show in the suspense laden climax. Sunil has enlivened the mood in the theatres with his perfect comedy time. Ravi Varma played the role of hero's opponent in college politics. Tannikella Bharani played the role of hostel warden with his typical comical sense. Kota Srinivasa Rao, and other supporting cast is good. The basic problem with Classmates is that there are no commercial elements and the film moves at snail pace. At the end of it we feel that it was better to dub the original rather than remake it as the whole film is a zerox copy. Music by Koti is average. On the whole this nostalgic trip is tiring. Verdict: Disappointing
