| Harish Shankar’s debut film for Ramgopal Varma’s ‘Factory’ and ‘Entertainments One’ Shock is like the proverbial curates egg - good in parts. The film is saved to a large extent by Ravi Teja’s undeniable charm of the central character; he does with style and panache. His on-screen chemistry between Jyothika tugs at your heart strings. And it is Jo’s best performance in recent times. She has been successful to convey the various mood swings and frailties of her character whose husband is framed. The story is about Sekhar (Ravi Teja) a Mr Nice guy and his wife Madhu (Jo) both working in an advertising agency and leading a happy married life. They are made-for-each other and is madly in love. But their picture perfect life comes to a standstill when Sekhar is shot by two cops who are encounter specialists Divakar (Ravi Kale) and Nagesh (Subburaj) due to mistaken identity. To save their job, they plant evidence and prove that Sekhar is a naxalite and a terrorist! Madhu with the help of an unscrupulous criminal lawyer Reddy (Kota) fights the case but loses. Shekar is proved guilty and sent to prison for 8 years. Madhu is shattered and realizes that everything was a planned operation by the two corrupt police officers who were hand-in-glove with Reddy. Meanwhile a ‘News Today’ Television reporter Geeta (Tabu) advises Madhu how to go about it but soon she is also brutally killed and police passes it off as a suicide. The rest of the film is how Sekhar escapes and with the help of Geeta takes revenge on the real criminals. Meanwhile there is a CBI officer (Naga Babu) who is investigating the case and adds to the final twist. The story of the film is inspired from half a dozen Hollywood and ‘desi’ films. The hero breaking out of jail for the blood of his wife’s killers has been seen in earlier films. Post interval 22 minutes is taken as a flashback story of how the lead pair fell in love including a song in the Swiss Alps and later an item number by Kashmira Shah were avoidable. The climax is well-executed but is full of blood and gore. How can an ordinary person working in an advertising agency well trained cops at one go? Quiet unbelievable! The production values are top class like camera of Sarvesh and background score of Amar Mohale. Everyone in the cast is good especially the villains. Tabu has nothing much to do and is wasted. Naga Babu and his assistant Ram Jagan provides some hilarious moments. Harish Shankar is a promising director but he could have made the second half more racy. The motives are haphazardly tied up and the final effect leaves you cold. Verdict: Average |
