| Romance is in the air Chukkallo Chandrudu is a light hearted tale for the metro audience. Siddharth is the heart and soul of this frothy romance as he melds effortlessly from casual froid to utter seriousness. Where the film fails is the storytelling and music. The film starts with a bang but it just does not unfold quickly especially the second half. Also the bit about a rich guy taking stock of three childhood friends as potential bride just doesn’t wash. The intimate portraits of love and human relationships have not been worked out properly in the script by director Shivakumar. Chakri’s music is also a big let down. Arjun (Siddharth) a rich NRI makes a promise to his grandfather (ANR) that he will marry a girl from India. And back home in India he takes the help of Puppy (Sunil), his buddy to trace the whereabouts of his childhood friends Sravani (Sada), Sandhya (Charmee) and Shalini (Saloni). Arjun does not reveal his identity to them and goes by a pseudo name Krishna and starts meeting the potential brides. Finally he ends up with what he feels is the right choice. The film ends up more as a wannabe Karan Johar film than being inspired by the director’s mentor Mani Ratnam. It is more of candy floss with the eternal question- Can friends be lovers? The film also has shades of the Tamil film ABCD. The cool dude Siddharth is the only redeeming factor which makes this film worth a dekko. He is just right as the romantic Casanova while Charmee scores over the other two girls. Sada does what Sneha did in ABCD and Saloni is ok. It is ANR (old is gold) as grandpa of the hero who is the scene stealer. Technically Chukkallo Chandralu is superior to the recent crop of films. On the whole, it is a cool romantic film which is rather slow moving. Verdict: Candy floss romance |
