These are hard times for Telugu films. A good movie is hard to find, so is a movie well-told or that gives some paisa vasool entertainment. Jai Chiranjeeva is what everybody was pinning hope on. Unfortunately it fails to deliver.

It is a typical formula Chiranjeevi film that just does not work due to lack of script and plot structure going haywire. You desperately want to like the protagonist Satyanarayana Murthy, the zany character played by Chiranjeevi but the plot and presentation bogs down into yet another terrorist and bullies drama.

Right from Chiranjeevi’s introductory scene in a second class railway compartment where he saves a damsel in distress to his final mission of taking revenge on a gun runner cum terrorist for doing a target practice on his 8-year-old niece, sounds hollow. How could an ordinary farmer from Amalapuram go to US and do it single-handedly, of course with some divine intervention, at a time when government agencies in our country find it difficult to eliminate anti-nationals elsewhere?

Trivikrama nd Vijay Bhaskar are well-known for their hilarious love stories told in lighter vein laced with the correct sentiments. But with Jai Chiranjeeva they end up with egg on their face as they try to dabble in something which they are not familiar. Added to that they have tried to invoke the spirit of ‘Anjeneya’ and dip into Hindu mythology to draw parallels and give a superman image to the already larger-than-life image of the hero.

Sameera Reddy is there just for glamour songs while Bhumika is reserved for sentiments and a Mauritius song. The comedian brigade of Sunil, Brahmanandam, Tanikella Bharani and Venu Madhav really tickle your funny bones as they interact with Chiranjeevi whose comedy timing is terrific. Arbaaz Khan as the main villain looks stiff while Rahul Dev and Jaiprakash Reddy are adequate. The music of Mani Sharma and camera of Venu are the other plus points.

Jai Chiranjeeva offers very little by way of surprise and it is the one-man entertainment troupe called Chiranjeevi that salvages this uneven film.

Verdict: Average
